I have the most mental clarity at night, in the moments I'm laying still in my bed doing nothing else. This is when all the to-do's spring to mind, along with all the friends I meant to connect with, the quote I forgot to write down, the prayers that need to be prayed. I am a list person too, so all that I gain in clarity materializes in a list for tomorrow, and that list grows throughout the next day as other things spring to mind. Like the untimely withering artichokes on my counter, impatiently waiting to be steamed. They gained a place on my list where they would no longer be forgotten. So after I crossed off "Sunday wash, Sunday fold, order charger, hot glue broken toy," I felt I deserved a rest so I read a chapter on my kindle (a book on writing called "Murder Your Darlings"). And then I decided it was time to conquer the artichokes, not just to cross them off but to eat them of course. Guiding me was half a recipe I snapped a picture of, and my childhood familiarity with their otherwise very intimidating anatomy. They steamed in what I've deemed a new holy trinity: butter, white wine, and garlic (along with olive oil and red pepper flakes). When I rolled back the foil, the wafting steam of tender deep green chokes bathed in sauvignon blanc lifted me to my grandmother's table twenty plus years ago. There is a subtle narrative in those memes that infers you are a passive audience. A passenger, along for a crazy, auto-piloted, political, socio-economic ride that is spinning out of control. But that is simply not the message God speaks to us. He tells us we are ambassadors for Christ, through whom God makes His appeal, "Be reconciled to God" (2 Cor 5:20). He tells us He has put His name on us (Num 6:27), and tells us not to take it up/bear it in vain (Ex 20:7). He tells us to represent Him to the nations, and to be holy (Ex 19:6). He tells us to make disciples and teach them to obey all that He has commanded (Mat 28:20)! He tells us that we are to proclaim His kingdom has come and is being established. He tells us we have work to do: To busy ourselves with the grueling & exhausting work of caring for the poor, the marginalized, the lonely, the oppressed, the physically sick, the mentally ill. We are to cultivate hearts that are willing to "say good bye to all [our] possessions" (Lk 14:33). To show ourselves spent. To lose our life in this world for His sake, so we can find it in the next. We aren't supposed to be passively experiencing the bumpy ride of whatever last year or this year holds, we are supposed to be out there, loading souls onto the bus that's heading for forever-peace. We don't control the terrain, we don't get to drive, we don't even get to decide when we are leaving. But we do know the destination, and that is some sweet news. 2021 may quite possibly be a sh** show by many standards (excuse my language), but that just means that in His strength and power, we have a lot more work to do. Let's get busy, and give the darkness of 2021 a reason to flee. We serve a mighty, reigning King, and He is calling all His willing slaves to get to work. 💪🙏 "That slave whose master finds him working when he comes will be rewarded...And that slave who knew his master's will and didn't prepare himself or do it will be severely beaten."
